How can you recognise that the time is right for you to focus on a niche?

You’ve probably heard it said that you should be focusing on a niche if you want to gain more clients.

The trouble is knowing when the time is right to take, what is felt like, a very bold step.

To give you an idea, let me introduce you to three previous attendees of my Super Niched programme. If you recognise their challenges and the results they were looking for, the time might be right for you to explore, discover and develop your niche.

A Consultant

The first example is a consultant who, because of the pandemic, found himself accepting all sorts of projects because he needed the money.

Consequently, he found he was doing work he didn’t like and he’d compromised on his day rate.

After over a year of this he knew he had to re-evaluate what he wanted to do and be able to confidently attract the clients he truly wanted to work with, through eye catching marketing messages.

A Virtual Assistant

Second example is a VA (virtual assistant) who was providing such a wide variety of services that ‘marketing was doing her head in’. If it was confusing to her, it was certainly confusing to her audience. They weren’t sure how she could help them or what her area of expertise was.

This is a very common problem for VAs and consultants who cover a broad spectrum or have a long menu of services. They aren’t known for resolving a specific problem or recognised for a specific area of expertise, which means they fade into the background.

A Web Designer

The third example is a web designer. He was sick of doing small websites where the goal posts kept moving. It was taking ages to get content from the client, which meant timelines slipped and profit margins were eroded.

He wanted to reduce the number of websites he designed but increase the value of each website project. He also had a very particular type of client that he wanted to work with based on his in depth industry knowledge.

The time is right to develop your niche

In summary, these business owners were ready to develop their niche and the time is right for you too if:

  1. You’d like a few more clients
  2. The clients you do have are a pain
  3. You don’t enjoy what you’re doing and want to fall back in love with your business
  4. You’re finding it difficult to create marketing content that produces results
  5. You’re not generating the leads you need and the ones you are getting aren’t appropriate
  6. You’re not hitting your revenue targets
  7. Your profit margin is shrinking

The benefits of operating within a niche

When you have clarity on your niche you can expect the following outcomes:

  • Increase your fees
  • Win new clients easily. They’re coming to you rather than you chasing them.
  • Gain more introductions and referrals
  • Do what you love with clients who are fully invested, so it doesn’t feel like work
  • Marketing is no longer a chore, because you’re crystal clear on your niche, know your ideal client inside out and have your key marketing messages ready to consistently share
